Trying Something New

It seems like, lately, the app to beat is Tik Tok. I see reposts of Tik Toks on every social media platform I frequent — teens doing dances, therapists giving advice, and the occasional food video. I finally bit the bullet and got in on the action. Now presenting: my first Tik Tok.

This is what I like to call a kitchen-sink recipe. My whims dictate rather than a traditional recipe and I go for whatever is stocked in the pantry. I call this an Orange Chicken, but it is makeshift (I'll explain soon) in a way.

Ingredients:
  • 1 kg ground chicken
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/4 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp garlic
  • 4 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp lemon
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar
  • 4 tbsp ponzu sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • Optional:
    • 1/2 onion, diced
    • 1/2 capsicum, diced
Recipe
  • Marinate the chicken for 15 minutes with salt, chili powder, and garlic.
  • Make the sauce. Combine the soy sauce, lemon, sugar, rice wine vinegar, and ponzu sauce.
  • Heat a skillet to medium heat and add 1 tsp of olive oil. Add the chicken and cook through.
  • Pour in the sauce and vegetables, and mix evenly with the chicken. Allow the mixture to boil.
  •  Add cornstarch, stir until mixture thickens.
  • Garnish with some cilantro and you're done!

You might be wondering: where are the oranges in this supposed Orange Chicken? Well, that's the beauty of a kitchen-sink recipe. You work with what you have and hope you can make something out of it. I was fresh out of oranges but realized the citrus notes of the ponzu sauce paired with the lemon juice would balance it out — and it worked! My dinner was exquisite.

I am looking forward to sharing more original recipes and more Tik Tok content with you. Please let me know what you think!
